Philip Johnson: Architecture as Art
Two years in the making, this exhibition was hosted by DC's Kreeger Museum, a jewel of a building and collection that was formerly the home of David Lloyd Kreeger, a major philanthropist, collector and patron of the arts.
Kreeger was also a patron of Johnson, who designed the Kreeger home in Washington in the mid-60s (completed 1967). Since 1994, a museum open to the public, this spectacular setting was extremely well suited to present the show of Johnson's last chapter of design in Philip Johnson: Architecture as Art.
The show specifically showcased the last 15 years of Johnson's architectural oeuvre, when the architect gave full expression to his love of sculpture as an essential part of architecture.
Curated by Lewis and designed by prominent New York firm, Wendy Evans Joseph Architecture (WEJA), the exhibition presented over 100 works. Catalog was also a collaboration of the Lewis and WEJA. Show received additional collaboration from Philip Johnson/Alan Ritchie Architects (PJAR)of New York.
